I am Sara Sloman, proud to be following the Women Drive Electric movement. I can sum this question up in order of appearance for my own electric journey! And no, it wasn’t plain sailing…
When I first experienced electric it was 2010 and the first EV charger went in at our head offices. Far from perfect but utterly bomb proof! Even the Mayor was driving EV at that time. My first EV was around 2018 and I had just begun to help with the conversion of the fleet vehicles at the local authority where I worked. I wanted to be part of the experience in order to improve it! The days of being electric because of work are gone.
Now I drive electric because I absolutely love the vehicle that I am in. It is incredibly flexible and practical, acting like a van for me and my activities both as a single mum dashing about, but especially as an active person who loves to run, mountain bike, camp and hike! I can now afford the Tesla model Y because I have a salary sacrifice scheme through my employer. They are the best, and I completely see the benefit of driving electric especially now that I am on the executive team we are leading by example in any way we can.
What I would point out is that I do not have a home charger, so the ~30,000 miles a year I drive are at the mercy of the public charging and I can safely say that this was an issue a couple of years ago, and now it is not. The cost is huge compared to home charging, but still less than when I had my diesel. It is a win win for me now, rather than a break even like it was back then.
